The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is set to release a global COVID-19 travel pass app to help get the aviation industry back on its feet, in the coming weeks.
The mobile app was originally developed to help passengers with screening during airport check-ins but later updated to store verified certificates for COVID-19 tests and vaccines along with providing important information like locations of testing centers and information of the tests required for the journey.
The news comes days before the G7 meet in the United Kingdom and three global airline alliances oneworld, SkyTeam, and Star Alliance are calling on the G7 governments “to agree on a common set of travel and health standards to enable the safe reopening of borders.”
IATA Director General Willie Walsh said that the response to the app has been positive and expects it to be available in the next couple of weeks.
The travel pass will help governments by providing a digital passport of health credentials that can be easily verified, added Director General Walsh.
The app is currently in the trial phase with over 60,000 people registered.
