Google’s latest mobile devices, the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro, have begun shipping, but as ever, Google’s latest devices aren’t “officially” available in New Zealand.
The Pixel 6 range is only available in Japan, Taiwan, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, the US and even our neighbours in Australia will be able to get their hands on the latest Google device.
As with previous Pixels, New Zealanders have had to parallel import the devices. However, this can potentially come with some drawbacks. The most significant of these drawbacks is the device may not be compatible with New Zealand’s carrier infrastructure – there is a possibility that a parallel imported Google Pixel 6 might not work with New Zealand’s 5G network.
As stated on Google’s Pixel Phone Help article, “not all Pixel 4a (5G) and later phones work on all 5G networks.” The guide advises potential customers to check with their carrier to see if the Pixel will work on their network, but seeing as the device isn’t “officially” supported in New Zealand, finding that information can be difficult.
According to WillMyPhoneWork, previous Google Pixels, have been compatible with New Zealand’s 4G networks, so we can assume the Pixel 6 will work with NZ’s 4G but 5G is yet to be confirmed.
How to buy the Pixel 6 in NZ?
Option 1: Mighty Ape
The process of getting the latest Google devices in New Zealand looks a lot easier this time around as the Pixel 6 and the 6 Pro are available to pre-order on Mighty Ape with an estimated arrival date of November 12th.
The Pixel 6 features Google’s new Tensor chip which was developed in-house and Google claims perform at similar levels to the Snapdragon 888 processor found in high-end Android phones.
The Pixel 6 has a 6.4inch, 1080×2340 OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and the 6 Pro has a 6.7inch 1440×3120 OLED display with up to 120Hz refresh rate.
Both devices come with a myriad of improvements over the Pixel 5 such as a bigger battery, better cameras and faster charging.
Option 2: Big Apple Buddy
