Windows 11 is set to get a new AI feature that will enhance PC games by bringing higher frame rates and better visual details.
The AI feature, named Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR), was discovered in a Windows 11 preview build. It aims to “make supported games play more smoothly with enhanced details.” While not further details were provided, there’s good reason to believe titles on Xbox Game Pass for PC will benefit from the feature.
According to Windows Central, sources state Auto SR will improve frame rates in select titles and upscale resolution to offer enhanced visuals. Since its an AI feature, PCs and laptops with an NPU chip will automatically make use of the tool.
Interestingly, this upscaling feature will rely on NPU silicon rather than a GPU of a PC. Like Nvidia’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) technology, which uses AI to improve image quality and ad frames to games for RTX graphics cards, Microsoft’s Auto SR will use NPUs instead, which may take the weight off a GPU’s load.
The Auto SR feature is expected to arrive in the next major Windows 11 update, version 24H2, which is coming in the second half of the year. Only time will tell how well the AI feature will be implemented in supported PC games.
This is one of the many AI features set to arrive in the next version of Windows 11. We can expect a fully realised AI chatbot in Microsoft Copilot, which will be able to understand complex questions, identify text and images, create websites or music, and plenty more. In fact, the company will be putting a Copilot button on future PCs like the rumoured Surface Laptop 6 and Surface Pro 10.
