Everybody knows that the Galaxy S24 is just around the corner, even if Samsung’s marketing department isn’t quite ready to admit it just yet.
Unfortunately, it sounds like the regular model will be a bit underwhelming, unless you’re mad keen on artificial intelligence (and willing to overlook past form and Bixby, its previous data point in this area).
One particular bugbear for photographers is that the S24 will apparently use the same 50MP ISOCELL GN3 sensor as has been present since last year’s S22.
But you might get something better if you’re prepared to wait another year. According to the leaker Revegnus, the S25 and S25 Plus will be getting a completely different camera sensor courtesy of Sony.
Of course actual specifics aren’t provided, but it’s unlikely to be a step backwards. Especially when the leaker caps the reveal with the words “I’m very happy”.
Elsewhere, Revegnus spills the beans on a one-inch camera sensor coming to another Samsung phone in the future, which should improve low-light photography no end.
This will very likely be the S25 Ultra, given the current S23 Ultra packs a 200MP camera with a smaller 1/1.3in sensor. That would be January 2025 at the earliest, and it’s always possible it could refer to a handset even later in Samsung’s roadmap — assuming it’s accurate in the first place.
It may seem a bit early to be thinking about the Galaxy S25, given the S24 doesn’t even exist yet. But it really does sound like the definition of an incremental update, unless you think a processor bump, a 0.1in screen size increase and a 2.5% larger battery is something worth writing home about — in which case you should probably be banned from buying stamps.
Samsung believes the introduction of AI will be game changing enough to compensate, and it may well be right. We’ll find out next month — on January 17 if early reports are to be believed.
